DAVID A. ESTES A Bag of Gold is one of 10 novels David A. Estes, 97, has authored. A veteran of World War II, he grew up around the cotton fields of Oklahoma and Texas before enlisting in the Marines in 1942. Estes fought in the South Pacific and earned a Bronze star for his heroism. Those experiences combined with his long-time career in radio, television and advertising have inspired his western and mystery novels. Bolivar Herald-Free Press interviewed Estes in 2017 for a feature article ( bitly.com/2NgqYTD ) and in 2019 for a Veteran’s Day special insert. Estes told reporter Jill Way about his passion for writing. “It’s something that keeps me going,” he says. “I have to concentrate, and it keeps me busy.” Estes has been a resident of Butterfield Residential for nearly three years. What to read in 2020 Caught in the Crossfire: A Memoir is the true story of a young girl trapped between warring nations in the Philippines during World War II. To escape the terrifying bombings of Manila, she and her family flee to the hoped-for safety of a gold mine in the jungle. The family’s efforts prove to be fruitless and they are finally imprisoned by the Japanese. A Bag of Gold is the fictional tale of Will Savage, a former range detective who is called back into action to smoke out a cold-blooded killer. Set in the rough and rowdy days of 1883 Kansas, Will’s job is not to arrest the man, but to reward him for the murder of the Abilene marshal. What do these two books have in common? They are by two authors who both live at Butterfield Residential Care Center in Bolivar. GEORGIA PAYNE Georgia Payne, 90, a World War II prisoner of war survivor, wrote Caught in the Crossfire: A Memoir , which details her experience as a teenager during three years of internment. Payne shared her tale with KOLR 10 reporter Jesse Inman during a television interview in November 2019. She described that at age 14 she was forced to work and follow strict orders, all while fearing for her life and her family’s lives.
