Thanks to several programs offered by Citizens Memorial, area residents can stay active through health classes, screenings, workout facilities and more. CLASSES AND SCREENINGS CMH supports community health through free education programs, including monthly cooking classes, lunch and learn events focusing on relevant health topics, and smoking cessation. CMH also offers screenings, including those for varicose veins, hernia, and memory and heart problems. Additional programs include support groups, cardiac wellness and diabetes education. STAYING active SENIOR WORKOUT FACILITY You’ve heard it before—exercise is good for you. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that physical activity is essential for healthy aging. Area residents age 55 and older can participate in senior- focused wellness programs and get free membership at the CMH Senior Health Center. Located at 1840 West Broadway, the facility offers open pool time; arthritis classes, including Tai Chi and chair and aquatic workouts; and exercise equipment, including stationary bikes, Nu-Steps, treadmills, free weights and rowers. Volunteer opportunities are also available. “Social interaction is essential for good mental health,” says Jody Pool, Coordinator of the CMH Senior Health Center. “Not only does the center offer free exercise services designed specifically for seniors, it also provides a unique social experience for our participants.
