8 VITALITY Spring 2019 WOMEN’S HEALTH 5 Are you at risk for fibroids? Doctors don’t know for sure what causes fibroids. But they do know that these factors raise your risk of developing them: AGE. Fibroids are more common in women in their 40s and early 50s. After menopause, fibroids typically shrink. FAMILY HISTORY. If your mother had fibroids, your risk of having them too is about three times higher than average. DIET. Eating a lot of red meat appears to raise risk, while a diet rich in green vegetables seems to lower it.
