citizensmemorial.com 7 Dr. Morrison and the CMH surgery team prepare Edwin Casado for surgery. Edwin Casado and Scott Daniel, P.T., meet for rehabilitation. More than 100 CMH staff and volunteers helped Edwin and Zoraida Casado during their stay. was any way the hospital could help with the financials,” says Dr. Morrison. “Without any hesitation, he said, ‘Yes.’” From there, Dr. Morrison and his team began to work out the travel and surgery details. Dr. Morrison specializes in minimally invasive spine surgery at CMH Orthopedic & Spine Center in Bolivar. He completed a fellowship at the world-renowned Texas Back Institute in Dallas and is a leader in the field, giving lectures at national and international spine surgery meetings. “The technology required to repair Edwin’s deformity is not available anywhere in the Dominican Republic, and the procedure we were planning for Edwin was a completely minimally invasive deformity correction that no other surgeon in southwest Missouri has the training or experience to perform,” Dr. Morrison says. The Casados speak Spanish, so interpreters assisted the family during their two-week stay in Bolivar. When not in the hospital, Edwin and Zoraida found rest at the Tremain Family Hospitality House at CMH, which is on the hospital campus. Church members, CMH staff and volunteers provided meals and transportation to appointments. After the five-hour surgery, Dr. Morrison felt confident Edwin would recover well. The very next day, Edwin was up and walking the halls of CMH. For the first time in decades, he was able to stand up straight. Edwin continued to have a smooth recovery—surpassing all goals during his first day of physical therapy. “The entire community got behind one person they didn’t even know. It means so much to me that I get to work for such a compassionate organization,” says Dr. Morrison. “Our leadership, medical staff, employees and volunteers understand that we work in the ‘mission field’ every day, whether we’re treating someone from southwest Missouri or from thousands of miles away. CMH truly cares.” Dr. Morrison is a board certified orthopedic surgeon in practice at CMH Orthopedic & Spine Center in Bolivar. He practices with board certified physicians Jonathan Gray, D.O.; David Rogers, M.D.; K. Ronald Smith, M.D.; and physician assistants Stephanie Aug and Jake Condren.
