citizensmemorial.com 13 » » Being proactive about keeping active physically, mentally and socially. “Sally is doing all of these things,” says Dr. Schreiber. “She has started treatment. There are FDA-approved medications for Alzheimer’s and, although the medicine is not curative, they are best suited and do their best job when symptoms are still mild. She also outlined a plan— not pharmacological—of what she was doing to stay active, and has expressed an interest in participating in a research trial.” “I’ve always been physically and socially active and interested in learning new things,” says Grant. “I have always enjoyed reading, knitting, quilting, music and gardening. As I have more time, I enjoy learning new things. I would like to learn another language and how to take better pictures. I also might try to find a book club to be able to talk about the books I read.” Grant says that with the support of her husband, her family and Dr. Schreiber, she has decided to do what she can to make her life as good as possible. “I’ve decided even more strongly than ever to enjoy each moment of each day and to do the things that have meaning and purpose to me and to others, especially those I love,” she says. THE FUTURE According to Dr. Schreiber, it is anticipated that the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid may have a second study of amyloid PET imaging later in 2018. Having a positive outlook on life is helping Grant turn something like an Alzheimer’s diagnosis into something she can manage. “I am looking forward to the rest of my life— especially with my family by my side—and enjoying whatever life brings,” says Grant. “I know that in the greater scheme of things that no one is in control of this disease and no one is promised tomorrow; however, for me it is very important to always have a strong home and faith.” “I am an optimistic person, but I also understand that there is no cure, yet, for Alzheimer’s and only limited therapies available,” she says. “But I am hopeful for more research about this disease that is affecting so many people now, and likely many more in the near future. With dedicated support, quality, cutting-edge medical care, well-funded research and good researchers such as Dr. Schreiber will come the answers needed for all of us.” *Name changed to protect the patient’s identity. “I am looking forward to the rest of my life—especially with my family by my side—and enjoying whatever life brings.”
