All seven facilities offer ways for high school students to gain real-world experience, whether through jobs, clinical hours or mentoring. Leaders say the programs help students see what a future in healthcare can look like. At Lake Stockton Healthcare Facility, students can work as domestic care technicians. In this role, they support the nursing team by making beds, delivering water, helping at meals and answering call lights. “The position gives them great exposure to care as part of the nursing team,” administrator Chris McBratney says. “Our residents benefit from the extra customer service, not to mention the social aspect of getting to work with younger students.” At Colonial Springs Healthcare Center in Buffalo, students gain experience through a partnership with Dallas County Technical Institute. More than 40 students trained at the facility during the last semester.
